Why America Disturbs Me

I've posted on several occasions in the past that my favourite place in the world is New York. Given the time and money to do so, I would happily spend years exploring the USA from coast to coast, and I sincerely hope that I get the opportunity to drive across the country before I die.

Despite this love of America, certain aspects of it really disturb me. Lead amongst these is the fact that large numbers of US citizens will decide which candidate to vote for in the next presidential election based on which candidate they think is least likely to be the Antichrist.

I may be wrong, but I'm assuming that the vast majority of these voters will be those not voting for the black Democrat with the "muslimy-sounding name".

Putting the whole world's safety in the balance based on a collection of fairy tales cobbled together over the past 2,000 years....perfectly rational....

America is a strange, yet wonderful place. One minute he is the Messiah, the next he is the anti-Christ. Hell, if unemployment percentages went down, the national debt didn't triple, and he didn't alienate our peace partner friend in the Middle East, I might be inclined to vote for him, but I find him ill-equipped to properly perform his duties and keep his promises (then again, some of his promises I am actually hoping he doesn't keep, since they scare the hell out of me).

I have no problem with people who make their decisions based on genuine political issues - all of your points are very valid reasons why a second Obama term might not be a good idea. But people who base their voting preferences upon what they think they've read in the Bible? That's frightening.

Yes, I heartily agree. I like the Bible, actually...I think it is a good book and some of that stuff may actually be based on some truthful events, but when people take it literally, word for word, and cling to the letter of the law versus the spirit of the law...that's a mite disconcerting.

I agree that the Bible is full of good an interesting stories. But so are Greek mythology, Norse Mythology and the Chronicles of Narnia. I'd be happy to see the Bible taught alongside the first two on that list as evidence of how people thought the world functioned in more innocent times. But I can't understand how otherwise intelligent people can live their lives to what they believe is the message contained in that book (or any other religious tome for that matter).

Thanks for this hilarious series of non sequiturs. I assume Erica's "peace" partner friend in the Middle East is the one which bases its military grab of Palestine on its reading of biblical evidence backed by phoney history and archeology. Western policy is thus directly tied to what they claim the bible says about their land entitlement.
I sincerely Obama does indeed alienate them in his second term. He's already got their measure.

Yes, Anonymous/NWM, you are correct in assuming that Erica's "peace" partner friend in the Middle East is the same one which historic writings and archeological artifacts dug up from tels, beneath which ancient civilizations existed, prove legitimate ancestral ties to the land. And you believe the artifacts are phony because obviously you have gone to Israel, seen them with your own eyes, and were able to make that determination? Israelite kingdoms and ancient synagogues existed dating back to the 11th century BCE (before the common era), and historic proof of this exists outside of the Bible, not to mention on the giant hilltop of Masada, the site of the Roman siege against Jews in 66 CE, where there still exists remnants of a synagogue, a mikvah, and a school house. But that's recent history and I guess doesn't really prove anything.

As I said, hilarious. Higher unemployment was inevitable given the state of the economy, debt was increased massively by Bush. And why the coy talk about peace partner friend?
Actually I have been to Masada etc., the difficulty is that there were lots of other diverse people in the land too, before, during and after.
The danger caused by the victims turned aggressors to their own cause is tragic. Learn to trust each other and live in peace.

Before Columbus, North America belonged to the Native Americans. On your logic better give it back to them then.

As far as whether anyone would now vote for Obama, surely you need to know who the other candidates are before deciding? They will almost certainly frequent breakfast prayer meetings, speak in tongues and be looking forward to the rapture.

Believe what you will, history belongs to the victors and not the vanquished. Israel rightfully and advantageously seized the land after she was attacked on every front by all her friendly Arab neighbors. Suck it. Sometimes life isn't fair. Done with this thread. Have fun.
