Nina Simone -- nice. Story, possibly long and boring to you, but sentimental for me and I need to share: I was hanging out in my local pub on Christmas day in 2000, Kirsty Maccoll (RIP) had just died a week earlier, and sitting at the end of the bar was a handsome, blond-haired, blue eyed Irish guy, wearing one of those smart cable-knit sweaters. Gorgeous.
We struck up conversation and I found out his name was Seamus, from County Donegal, and I am just putty in the hands of someone with a brogue. We became very "friendly" over the course of the evening and he drove me home after many hours shooting doubles pool with my friend Bubba (RIP) and his then girlfriend, and drinking many shots in honor of poor Kirsty.
Before I got out of the car, he gave me as a parting present -- I had never seen him again after that night -- a Nina Simone greatest hits cassette tape, which I still have, and which was the only music he kept in his car, and that was how I got into Nina, and why, whenever I hear her I think of Bubba -- who also loved her -- and Seamus from County Donegal.
I eventually ended up naming my goldfish after Seamus...for closure.
